* Drill-bits.jpgThis article is the first of a series of 'tasters' from sister-publication Locks & Security Magazine.

By Colin McClements

The article is designed to give you an overview of the different types of drills and equipment to assist in using the correct tool for the job.

TYPES OF DRILLS

I have often asked locksmiths, what drill do you use? The reply more often or not is, 'Just an ordinary 6mm or 7mm drill.'

Most drills are metal specific, to be used on certain types of material. The manufacturers give a general guide of which materials the drills should be used for: aluminium, cast iron, stainless steel, hardened. Hopefully, the information contained will be of use to my fellow locksmiths.
Choosing the correct drill for the job in hand is important.

DRILLS WE USE IN LOCKSMITHING

The most common drills we use in our trade are HSS, Cobalt, Solid Tungsten Carbide, and TCT (tungsten carbide tipped), often referred to as hardplate drills. The number of HSS and Cobalt drills available has already been covered.
